30, flirty and THRIVING

30 yes, flirty no, thriving? HECK YES

Today is my 30th birthday - yay! I’ve said goodbye to my 20s and hello to my 30s. Age is an odd thing, a few years ago I was getting really anxious about turning 30. It peaked when I turned 29 but then disappeared when I woke up on the day and realised it was like any other day, I was exactly the same - nothing to be scared about.

Theres too much around age and the stigma, there’s too much social pressure and too many where you’re supposed to be’s, but I am exactly where I want to be.

This year however, with the current state of the world I’ll be celebrating my 30th very differently to how I had originally planned. . . .

Yes it absolutely SUCKS that I’ve had to cancel my emo night, I can’t see my sister and we all had to basically stay inside but it could be a heck of a lot worse [plz don’t let that tempt fate]. This post isn’t going to turn into one big chat about the coronavirus, I think we’re all aware how serious the current situation is. Personally, I’m trying to stay positive, take each day as it comes and follow the government guidelines.

But, once this is all over and society starts getting back to normal, you can bet your butt I’ll be celebrating with all my nearest and dearest.

So yeah, it’s not every day you turn 30. So of course I enlisted the help of my fave Leeds based photographer and pal Katie to document my coming of age. [Is coming of age the right term lol? I don’t think it is, is it lol?] Of COURSE I had to get me some of these big foil balloons just to really make sure everyone knew what the crack was. I had envisioned a big pink dress, big stompy boots and a leather jacket. The theme was “5 year old birthday party chic” I think I nailed it lol. The day we shot these there was storm (number 2983471847 of the year) and I remember being so COLD, I feel cold looking at these.

So, as for being 30 and what I've managed to achieve so far, I’m pretty damn pleased. No, I’m not married, I have no desire to have children, I can’t drive nor do I plan on learning to do so and I’m not even close to being on the property ladder. All the above things ~society~ expects us to do, to measure our success. But what if that’s not the path you want to follow? What if success to you means something completely different?
For me success is:

  • running my own flat and being self sufficient
  • Living in my favourite city
  • Working really damn hard in my career and achieving more than I thought I possibly could
  • Finding my ride or die pals
  • Finding contentment in life
  • having clear cut goals
  • Just being happy :-)

Being 30 also doesn’t mean I need to change the way I am, we don’t need to “grow up” as such. I’ll still be an all pink wearing, Hello Kitty loving and wishing I was an anime character until I’m old and  pink rinsed. I think as well as the social pressure to have achieved X,Y and Z there’s also this expectation you need to “grow up” I have grown and I’ll be bringing all the pink with me.

So, three decades I’ve been here, I’ve done a lot, I’ve seen a lot and I’ve “grown” a lot. I’m excited for my 30s, I’m fully here and ready to embrace what my 4th [ekk] decade will bring. Heres to my 30s, may they be my best decade so far.
