Finding Alternative Fashion

Ok, so for a little while, to describe fashion as ''alternative'' made me do a little cringe. Why? I'm not entirely sure, it made me do a little eye roll whenever I heard different fashion referred to as that. I think it was being pigeonholed as one thing when there are so many offshoots of alternative fashion, something I discovered as I started to experiment with fashion, I started to get a different understanding as to what alternative fashion meant.

It's not just wearing a lot of black, mesh, band t-shirts and the like, multiple piercings, studded anything and dramatic makeup etc, for you to be into darker, or even witchy fashion with demonic symbols, shirts the devil and demons adorning the fronts of them ''traditionally'' it's thought that alt fashion, the polar opposite of how I like to dress. I grew up in a really really religious family, as I grew older, I took a different approach to my faith, it was no longer as intense but because of that I never liked to wear anything with a more demonic edge. It's only now I've started buying the odd thing with a pentagram or a planchette. Still feeling a little uneasy about it. For me, alt fashion is just a different way to dressing from the mainstream. There are so many branches to experiment with and it's definitely not just a phase mom.

My take alternative fashion is all about experimentation, you can, of course still do that with mainstream fashion but with alternative fashion experimentation, there's a little bit more of a quirk. It's about letting the way you present yourself to become an extension of your personality, embracing personal style. That's why I like to dye my hair, cut in the tiniest fringe, be a walking clashing rainbow, wearing things that may not strictly go but be having fun in what you're wearing anyway and most importantly, being unapologetically YOU not doing or wanting to do stuff to fit in. It's breaking that mould.

I've got a few alternative staples in my wardrobe but my ultimate fave is my tartan pants [shock] I've been a sucker for a tartan pant for as long as I can remember and my collection has steadily grown over the years. My latest addition to the collection these yellow babies my sister very kindly got me for Christmas that I practically lived in over the Christmas break. When these were shot it was a particularly gross day over the holidays and I really cba to leave my flat to shoot pictures so we utilised one of our balconies instead. I was kinda sceptical that the images wouldn't turn out ok but I really liked the finished result as they seem to go with the whole grunge/street vibe that my long sleeve/tartan combo seemed to bring.

  1. I always find yellow a hard colour to style but you've done it super well! For me I've always thought alternative fashion is about freedom to experiment with styles and being able to chose your style without feeling the pressure to conform to what's currently in fashion. Like take what you want from current fashions but also not being scared to try something new xo

  2. I always used to find myself trying to copy Hayley Williams (lol i still do) and her more recent fashion along with the self titled era is where i've always felt most comfortable. I've realised wearing pops of bright colours that are comfy and not skin tight unlike my 2011 days is really uplifting and it's still 'different' enough for me. i experiment with make-up a lot more now to suit my style too! i really want those yellow pants haha

  3. I absolutely love your style, it reminds me of Hayley Williams but it's still unique in its own way. I will definitely be taking some inspiration from your looks but probably won't wear quite as much color :D Although these pics really make me wanna get some yellow pants ;D
